Miss Wagner’s Class Participates in Global Read Aloud

The students in Miss Wagner’s 4th Grade Class at Johnson Creek Elementary participated in the Global Read Aloud this fall.  The Global Read Aloud is a Global Literacy Initiative to simply have one book (that the teacher selects from a list of books selected for the Global Read Aloud) to read to their class and then they try to make as many global connections as they can during a 6 week period of time. Their class at J.C. read the book “PAX” by Sara Pennypacker.  The idea for the Global Read Aloud was started by Pernille Ripp – a Middle School Language Arts teacher from Oregon, WI.  The Global Read Aloud started in 2010.

This year, Miss Wagner’s class was able to Skype with a class from North Carolina and Florida, and they also made a Global connection via video with a class from Sydney, Australia.  The class also joined Edmodo (an educational website) that allowed them to ask and answer questions about the book they were reading with other classes around the United States.  They then created Padlets that proposed questions to other classes, as well as allowed them to answer questions about the book from different classes reading the same book.

The students prepared their own questions giving clues about the state they live in, and then also made predictions and connections.  While reading the book, the students created drawings of what they thought the main characters looked like.  In the end, they created a fox out of model magic, that represented the main character’s pet from the book.
